What are the ‘Must See’ Sights in Rome as a Study Abroad Student?

St. Peter’s Basilica, Sistine Chapel & the Vatican Museums
These three major sights are located in the smallest country in the world- Vatican City. St. Peter’s Basilica is free to enter and is the largest basilica in the world, home to the Pope. The Sistine Chapel, symbolic of the papacy, was built for Pope Sixtus IV decorated with beautiful frescos by famous artists including Michelangelo. The Vatican Museums are a main attraction in Rome to learn more about the beauty of Vatican City and the history of the papacy. Tickets need to be purchased in advance for both the Sistine Chapel and Vatican Museums.

Colosseum
The Ancient Roman Colosseum is one of the seven wonders of the world. The Colosseum is Rome’s most famous sight and no visit is complete without it. Tickets need to be booked in advance to get access to the inside of the structure along with a guide to tour the Palatine Hill and Roman Forum.

Trevi Fountain
The Trevi Fountain, another major tourist sight, is home to the ritual coin toss. Legend says that if you throw a coin into the Trevi Fountain your return to Rome is assured and if you throw a second coin in you will fall in love with a Roman.

The Pantheon
The Pantheon is a major tourist destination and is the burial place of the artist that created it, Raphael. This sight is one of the best preserved structures in Rome. It is free to enter on weekdays and on the weekends payment and reservations are required.

Spanish Steps
The Spanish Steps is my personal favorite spot in all of Rome. With access to Rome’s cobblestone streets, restaurants, and luxury shops you’ll be sure to have the best people watching the spot. The Spanish Steps are also a beautiful sunset spot which is not complete without someone you love and a little gelato.

Borghese Gardens & Museum
The Borghese Gardens and Museum hold one of the most extensive and beautiful art galleries in Europe. So, if you are an art lover this is a sight you cannot miss! If not, this spot is worth seeing to stroll the beautiful garden filled with happy faces, beautiful architecture, and an entire city view of the eternal city.
